This campaign is about serving Howell. We don’t have time for petty partisanship any longer. The issues we are facing are not about party, these issues are about how our community moves forward over the next 4 years. If we continue with our current path we will have an overdevelopment of unoccupied warehouses and a continued destruction of open space. We need leadership that will hold developers accountable and not be influenced by outside financial interests or the donations that their campaign received. One of the first things that I will push for the good of the residents is a Howell Ethics Committe manned by community volunteers to hold the public employees and officials accountable and free from conflicts of interest.
Howell residential property owners are overtaxed for the services we receive. While our property taxes have continued to increase during the past 22 years of Republican majority, services to the community have not improved. Despite the high taxes, every homeowner in Howell is forced to privately contract for trash services. Services for our most vulnerable populations (children and seniors) are improperly funded. While the Republican controlled Council has wasted resources issuing Resolutions on national issues they have taken their eyes off the job they were elected to do for the residents. Our Council needs to bring the focus back to finding solutions for our tax issues and allocating those taxes to the community they serve.
The commercial areas of Howell are littered with abandoned commercial properties creating an embarassing impression for our community. National businesses have been abandoning our community to move just up Route 9 to Freehold. Just in the past 3 months we have seen IHOP abandon a larger location with prime visibilty and location to move up Route 9 to Freehold. We watched as LIDL left behind the Howell location to open in a less desirable location in Freehold. We have sat with a beautiful abandoned modern movie theater, while a dilapidated AMC stays open in Freehold. Stop & Shop is the next casualty in town and will likely sit abandoned for years. During all of this time our Republican led Council have stayed quiet as we watch our commercial properties lose value. We need leadership that will openly engage our business community and work with them to promote our amazing small businesses and make our prime business corridor on Rte 9 attractive to more businesses.
The Republicans have ignored the needs of our community during the years of unchecked growth. We have placed a strain on the outdated energy infrastructure of the town and as a result power otages are a regular occurence. Nothing has been done to hold JCP&L accountable for its failure to maintain the lines and upgrade the substations. We also have major infrastructure issues with American Water in town and our cable/internet providers have never been accountable. We need to hold theses utility companies accountable to their customers, the residents of Howell, and we need leadership that will do that.
Howell plays a critical role in the health of the Manasquan Watershed. As the home of the Manasquan Reservoir we have significant areas of land to protect. The natural beauty of the reservoir requires preservation of open space not just by the County but also by our town. As part of a strategic plan to improve efforts to preserve open space around town we will need to institute builder concessions on developers. We will enforce requirements for funding toward our open space program and in non-residential cases renewable energy mandates.
Our farms need to be protected and maintained as a core part of the fabric of our community. We need to release the restrictions on the marijuana industry in Howell. Allowing our farms to include marijuana as a crop may help their continued viability.
Howell voters overwhelmingly supported the legalization or marijuana, yet the Council has prohibited our farmers from growing this legal crop. As farms are bought up for no agricultural purposes like warehouses and developments, we need to permit marijuana as a crop to Save Our Farms
